Brenda H James is a writer, speaker, coach and a budding lyricist/musician. She has just released her book “Suicide – there is another way”. My love of writing started in the classroom at age five. I remember writing imaginative stories effortlessly page after page after page. In my adult years I’ve consistently started my day with free writing soon after meditation and the results are astounding. Free writing is a prewriting technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic. It produces raw, often unusable material, but helps writers overcome blocks of apathy and self-criticism. Not long ago I trialled writing a poem a day for 100 days. Life got in the way the first time so I just pick up my pen and have another go. In 2007 I was one of 12 mums who published a book called “Mums the Word”, a book about mums, for mums, by mums. My love of writing and a huge dollop of courage has now seen me pen my own story. The story of a girl with a simple and privileged upbringing in South Auckland, loving parents and caring grandparents, yet a girl who still created a life of drama, destruction and consistently didn’t want to stay in this world.
