Normally we would say "Oasis in the desert". However at Lake Wainamu, you can say it's a desert in the oasis. The sand dune is about 3 or 4 square km big surrounded by green hills and farms with Lake Wainamu in the east. This has bought us endless fun to slide down. The walkway is also highly recommended. Not to hard at all with a waterfall in the vicinity. As for the car park itself, it's small. Do lock your car. There are thieves operating. Wear an jandal as the sand can be scotching hot.

The carpark is really small and fills up quite fast. I was lucky enough to get one here. There is street parking all the way to the beach, as well as the parking close to the beach. The parking for the Te Henga Walkway is also close by. The entrance to the dunes as well as the lake is by this carpark.

There is almost no carparks . people have to park on the yellow lines. its sad that for a popular place for families to enjoy the car park is non existing. I think Auckland council can do better

Excellent that parking wardens were there to help find parks on a public holiday.

This is an easy walk to do and although has a couple of water crossings they aren't deep and plenty of space if you want to take your shoes off. You can set off upstream which forks off to the left or you can go over the dunes. In winter the dunes are typically hard packed and easy to walk on providing a more direct route to the start of the trail which goes around the lake. At the halfway mark there is a gorgeous waterfall and a lovely place to stop and take in the tranquility. THis is a relatively easy walk no huge climbs and the trail is wide and well formed. A couple of parts could be better signposted. Highly recommend with kids as the dunes can be lots of fun and the lake appears to get swimmers all year round.

Parking area is quite small and can be busy with lots of cars Need to park with care if you have kids Need to cross over other side so wear shoes you dont mind getting wet or take them off The sand dune is Amazing kids will surely enjoy Take the right side walking up the sand dune and over to the lake ,lake is ok but not that breath taking Watch the kids if they are in the water We didn't go to the waterfall on this trip But kids enjoyed the sand dune and walking along in the stream all the way back

Very nice track and great with some challenge because it was a wet day. Perfect for turist in summer but when it's rainy you have to get the gear and fit for that
