I would like to give zero stars. It was a hospital long time ago. Now it's just a place, where you should head, when you are totally broke.

I have stayed there for quite a while yeah not too bad but it is for people that can't get accommodation from housing New Zealand and I think with all maintenance that has been done on it just needs a few more and I stayed there yes it was called before maintenance started I was playing 250 for two people per week that included power but now you have to pay your own power now I don't know where the future is for the old hospital but hopefully it can be restored back to are proper heritage site meaning that it can be restored and used as a museum it would be the better choice
Awesome place which is on the old Balclutha hospital site, love that old hospital style. Great owner who was very friendly and great to have a yarn with, very cheap accommodation too!

WARNING! ATTENTION! WARNUNG! DO NOT STAY HERE unless you have nowhere else to go. I'd rather sleep under a bridge than stay here. Ne reste pas ici. Si vous êtes à la recherche d'une auberge de jeunesse pour routards, ce n'est pas l'endroit. Bleib nicht hier. Wenn Sie nach einem Backpacker-Hostel suchen, ist dies nicht der richtige Ort. The place was dirty, dark and filthy. The other people staying here are homeless people. The ONLY reason you would even consider going here is that its very cheap but even then I wouldn't ever go back here. Edit because i cant reply: I have no issue with homeless people and if you truly care then maybe you'd clean the place up, it's really gross. This is not a place for travellers to stay and meet other travellers which someone might expect when you call it a "backpackers", this is just bordeline derelict public housing.

Cheap housing for people when they need it. Currently under going a massive upgrade so can only get better.
