Visited store on 17 March to buy a flip case for an Oppo phone. Attendant had to defer to his Manager to get this sorted. They didn't have one in store but another local store did. After some hesitation on the Manager's part, he offered to bring it across and directed the staff member take my contact details so they could ring me when it arrived, with the advice that it would take only a couple of days. As I didn't hear from them, had to follow up myself to learn that indeed it had arrived and was waiting for collection. I presented at the store, attracting the attention of someone, anyone, to serve me and was asked for ID. When I said why as I hadn't yet paid for it, the fellow then said he would have to get his Manager to retrieve the case. I asked why for such a simple sale and insisted he serve me. He left me standing and a 'manager' came towards me offering me a seat to wait. Again, I insisted I be served and why should I wait, for a simple two minute transaction. After all, the case was there and all it required was for me to pay for it. It appeared to me that he would rather his staff attend to customers potentially purchasing higher value items i.e. phones as evidenced by a woman standing next to me who had entered the store AFTER me. Now, I have nothing against Indians,(I have visited India on several occasions, a wonderful country full of friendly and vibrant people) but the way they run their retail businesses over there mirrored what I experienced in the Riccarton store being majority staffed by Indians. In India, many retail outlets have a plethora of staff, one to welcome you in the door (not in Riccarton though!), one to attend to you, another to find the goods, another to assist and another, always the Manager, to take the cash. It seemed, in the Riccarton store, they have chosen to run along similar lines, apparently deferring to their Manager for the simplest decision. I couldn't help but remind them they are operating in NZ, not India.
