This Zen group is affiliated with the Mountains and Rivers Order, a well-respected lineage based at Zen Mountain Monastery in upstate New York. The Christchurch group operates from 4 Kennedy Place, Hillsborough, and meditate there several times each week. The atmosphere is respectful, positive and welcoming. Beginner instruction is offered by experienced meditators, introducing people to the practice of Zen sitting, and providing pointers on how to develop a meditation practice at home.

This Zen group was recommended to me by a friend who had recently started going. I went to check it out and found the people there very friendly and helpful, and they didn't try to 'sign me up'. They gave me beginner's instruction in zazen (Zen meditation) which I found very helpful, and I could continue practice at home. I kept going to the zendo as it's great to practice with others who are also interested in this path. They also run twice-yearly retreats with visiting teachers from the USA. Definitely worth checking out.
