The Art Society exists to promote interest in the study of and practice in the Fine and Applied Arts in Otago. Formed in 1876 by a "small group of gentlemen", who were favourable to the formation of a Society of Arts in Dunedin. This small beginning flourished to such an extent that by 1897 there were 140 artists and 50 honorary members. Today the Art Society is over 700 members strong.
