Totara wood was highly prized as it durable and resistant to decay. The tree produced a powerful antibacterial and antioxidant agent. This natural component of the tree called totarol, enabled the Totara trees to live up to 1,000-2,000 years free from microbial attack and produce top quality durable wood, long after other NZ timbers had rotted away. The longevity of the Totara is thought to be extended by the anti-bacterial properties of the wood which is now naturally used in French L'Oreal cosmetics and skin cream products. This massive tree is thought to be 2,000 years old and measures 8.5 m around its trunk.
