Awesome location with great views, especially for sunsets. We stayed in 4 of the lodges and it worked great for the 14 of us who were here. The kayak hire was great, and the water by the lodge was nice and fairly flat, so super easy to kayak on. The restaurant was super busy each night, so if you are going to go definitely book.

The view from our room and deck was exactly as we imagined Great Barrier Island to look. Beautiful. Room was really clean with a comfortable and large bed , well equipped for self catering, not that we did that as the dinners were really good. Plenty of books to read, games to play and others to talk to from all over NZ. Hosts were fun and welcoming. Highly recommend staying here.

We came here on our last night on the Barrier as a bit of a treat and it did not disappoint! The staff were a tad reserved at first but warmed up pretty quickly and the service was good. We ordered scallops starter, the fish and eye fillet steak mains and the cheesecake dessert. It was pumpkin spice and ginernut flavour with chantilly cream and believe me I know it sounds a tad out there but gods above it was one of the BEST things I have ever put in my mouth. The wine list, which we didnt quite get through but made a respectable dent in, was an absolute delight. Tears were shed in the car on the way home over that dessert. We can't wait to come back.

Beautiful location. Lovely accommodation. Comfortable rooms. Basic but good breakfast. Friendly & welcoming staff. Only time saw smile on host face was just before checking out.

We had an amazing dinner here and would highly recommend. Beautifully cooked, big portions, and made to feel at home with the warm and welcoming by staff. Will definitely be back again.

Good location, handy especially doing the hike as it’s walkable to one of the entrance. The studio rooms looking out to the water is very nice. Down side - bit of a trip to get some food supplies.

Good food. Great location. Amazing trip at Great Barrier except car renting at Shoal Bay Rentals. If you don't want to spoil your trip, stay away from Shoal Bay Rentals. They ask 100% advance and thats it. You are stuck with their poor service. Val from this company had arranged a car at the airport but that car was nowhere to be seen. She wasn't contactable either. Nor do they have anyone at airport/ferry to sort any issues. I wasted 2.5 hours waiting to contact her. I reached her office spending 60 dollars from my own pocket. Her office was closed too. Finally I took a car that was parked at her office and spent 30 dollars on fuel to fill it up. This car had worn-out tyres and kept skidding while driving. Till date Val has neither apologized nor reimbursed me my 90 dollars. Worst experience ever!

Amazing location, overlooking the water. Studio room was clean, tidy and kitchenette had everything we needed including a cooktop, microwave, oil, bbq utensils etc. Don't buy any milk from them though, you'll need to take out a small mortgage to afford it.
