Smiling Sphinx Rock is the smaller of two free standing rocks at Cathederal Cove. The area is one of my favorite places in NZ. Absolutely worth the visit. It is best to walk here, because you get much more of the nature. If you are physically not able you can pay for a boat ride here. The cove with the beaches on each side is spectacular. There is a toilet with a window view on the southern beach. Very special too! :-) The two rocks close to the beach are tremendous also.

The lesser free standing pillar around cathedral cove. This one is on the main beach so it's patrolled by lifeguards in the peak season and has toilets (composting and smell pretty foul/overused in the summertime). There is a little waterfall at the far end of the beach which comes from underground so is far colder than the sea if you need extra cooling off. Water can be treacherous so only go out if you can actually swim and take all your rubbish with you.
Nice view of Mares Leg Cove, bathing beach and Smiling Sphinx Rock
The smiling sphinx rock is one of the highlights of the cathedral cove. Together with the beach and the cove this atmosphere is stunning and is worth the 45 minutes walk from the parking lot. Take your time here and smile together with the rock
Even in winter, This place is epic. It's a 45 minute walk to get there though. Bring water
Nice rock. It can be nice for some pictures
Somewhat decent rock feature worth swimming towards.
Beautiful rock formation by the gorgeous beach, big waves. About 30 minutes walk each way from the trail head. Check the tide hours before visiting to avoid disappointment. Toilet facilities available, no parking at the trail head. Best is take the Park n Ride up to the trail head, cost only 5 for return, there's a shuttle for every 20 minutes from Hahei Visitor Parking.
