New Zealand Artificial Limb Service and Orthotic House are collaborating on a journey to provide amputees with improved wrap around services, and to prevent amputations through the appropriate prescription of an orthoses for diabetes and vascular patients. With approximately 200 of amputees new to the service being diabetes and vascular disease patients, protection of their other limb through prescribing orthoses will ensure NZALS continues to provide a wrap-around service for their patients as well as precise rehabilitation plans to ensure independent and productive lives for the people they care for. A wrap around service is ensuring that patients receive. An appropriate orthotic prescription is a proven amputation prevention approach, creating a total opportunity of preventing approximately 170 amputees entering the NZALS service each year. This will lead to significant savings to NZALS’ bulk funded amputee service that can be redirected to address service equity. The collaboration between NZALS and Orthotic House is an exciting advancement in the service being provided to amputees through a government agency by utilising funding in a proactive way.
