RAW is a charitable social venture set up by Annah Stretton to work with recidivist female offenders to replace amplifying criminal activity with scholarshiped education and negotiated work. Annah and her sister Rebecca’s venture (RAW) is recognised by the Department of Corrections as the only model of this kind successfully breaking a cycle of crime, drugs and violence by targeting the mothers and their tamariki; giving them visibility, acceptance and real choice for a different way of life. RAW works in Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility, Arohata Prison and Rimutaka Women’s Prison for at least 6 months with women interested in coming to RAW. During this time both the women and RAW assess whether RAW’s programme in Hamilton is right for them. RAW only selects women motivated to make real changes to their lives and the selection process is assisted by Corrections Psychology Team and Probation Services. After a long period in prison it can take time for a woman to settle and establish a daily routine after living in a highly regulated environment. RAW provides housing the woman shares with up to 3 other women, provides work experience and volunteering opportunities, and time to explore study or work options. During the transition from prison to the community, the woman also completes any parole mandated courses and has regular coaching sessions where she is encouraged to practice the thinking and problem-solving skills she learnt on her prison programmes.
