This is one of the hidden gems of New Zealand. I must warn that it is not a location for somebody who is looking for a cookie cutter experience. This is a genuine whale hunter house. Though the hunting has stopped in 1964, the house still feels as if the owners has never left it. You will learn an abundance of fascinating stories, such as the foundation being made of actual whale bones, which you can see and touch! As if the house itself wasn’t a great reason to visit it, the lady who runs the place has THE best souvenir shop in the region. Everything is ocean themed, great quality and unbeatable price. We sometimes stop at Kaikoura just to get souvenirs from that shop.

Shelley was a mine of information and made the visit really worthwhile. I loved the kitchen: it was so home. The history of the tenacity and strength of the folk who lived there was a privilege to learn about.

Nice piece of history with original house from 1844, and clever lasting built with whale skeleton. Worthwhile to go to understand some of the whaler history.

Adults will find this well worth a visit and the 10 entry fee. Fyffe House opens at 10:00 am. Allow at least 40 minutes for your visit. . There's a lot of reading to be done about historical information. I've given this rating 4/5 rather than full marks. The constant signs on every display asking you not to touch items is unnecessary. Many of the information panels have spelling and grammatical errors. There is no visitor toilet. Children wouldn't find this overly interesting. The wonderful grassed area outside could be developed a little to include something for children. We walked up Tom's track to Scarborough Street on the top of the peninsula. Then we walked along to the end of the peninsula to Ward Street. You can climb a stile and walk down through the sheep paddock to lower Ward Street. The walkway is marked. Then walk along the beach road to Fyffe House. It ends up being a big circle walk with Fyffe House as the destination.

Great history of Kaikoura and the people who were way before us and the conditions they faced and conquered. Well worth the 10 entry fee. History for generations..
