The Taranaki Falls walk is a 6km loop track that begins about 100m below the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre and takes about 1-2 hours to complete depending on your walking speed. There is a small parking area at the upper trail entrance and you can also park opposite the Visitor Centre - it's a P60 area but if it's not crowded you'll be okay to park there. There are toilets at the car park as well as inside the Visitor Centre. This hike is suitable for everyone except very young children and is rated as easy. I'd recommend taking the lower part of the loop trail as it gives nice views of the falls as you approach. There are various viewpoints from which to take pictures. To continue the loop, climb the 100 steps to the top of the falls (if you prefer going down more than up then walk the loop in the opposite direction). There's a toilet at the top of the falls and you have the option to add on the Tama Lakes hike - but this will take at least another 2 hours return and is more challenging. All trails are very well maintained. The return part of the loop crosses a bridge and follows the edge of the lava flow through eroded gullies - offering glimpses of the Chateau Tongariro Hotel. On a clear day you'll also get views of Mt Ngauruhoe - unfortunately on this day the weather closed in under a blanket of cloud and mist

A great short walk, suitable for kids over 7. The terrain is not too difficult and for the most part the track is well maintained. Make sure you pack sunscreen and weather appropriate gear including good shoes and hats as there are parts of the walk that are exposed low tussock areas with no cover on the upper part of the track. The walk also takes you through large sections of forest on the decent or lower section. The waterfall itself is impressive and on a clear day vistas of the surrounding mountains are gorgeous.

A great day walk that weaves through beech forest running parallel to a river, onto bog, alpine scrublands and ancient lava flows. The walk was impressive; well tracked and sign posted. We took the lower track, which had a short hill climb to the top of the waterfall. Personally prefer going up steep, that going down it! Well recommend.

Easy/moderate walk possible to do in 2 hours. If doing the 6-km loop, I suggest going counterclockwise through the upper track rather than the lower track to avoid the 100 or so steps near the waterfall.

Great popular half day walk. We started and finished at the chateau where there is an parking and other facilities. The walk is easy going with fantastic scenery even on a foggy wet day. The waterfall is fantastic and accessible from above and below. The trails are wide and very well maintained. A must do if exploring the area.

Amazing view, path was well made / maintained including bridges and catwalks. Not a hard walk, great for beginners no pack needed although bring your camera! Track is exposed and while doable in the rain I would suggest a good rain jacket.
