Fancy hut, looks like a ski lodge rather than a hut but well equipped and a nice view of both the mountain and the falls nearby

Huts in New Zealand are usually containers taken and placed anywhere… far from nice looking. Then you go to the “Great Walks” and they suddenly show off with nicely made wooden huts. I have traveled in many places. This hut is a really nice facility but, as for the rest of the walk, it feels more as a tourist place rather than an actual hut. This is a hotel, not a hut. Gee, they even have gas stoves here… which is something here in NZ you can only find in rich places. I saw people complaining because there is no Wi-Fi… gee, you are in a (supposed to be) hut in the nature, you are here to enjoy nature, not to take picture and post it right away on some social media. Anyway, this is a fine building, what I do not like is that, if you have some experience doing hikes, this place, this walk, makes you understand that “great walks” exist just as money maker, not for enjoying the nature.

The Huts in New Zealand are amazing, flushing toilets, potable water on tap and gas available. It's such a shame they doubled the cost this year but I still plan on going back asap. I have walked/tramped/hiked in many amazing places and this place so close to home (Australia) is just amazing.

This was my first self catered walk (as opposed to walks organised by walking companies) and the facilities in the DOC huts were superb. I was surprised to see amazing facilities: mattresses, gas stoves, washing sinks with soap, great seating facilities and good toilet facilities. I was thankful for not having to carry my tent and sleeping mat. The people we met on our first night at the hut, we ended up walking with them till the end of the track. The variety of conversations was especially helpful on the days it rained incessantly. I have very fond memories of this track. I would love to do it again one day.

World Class Hut and facilities. THE newer larger capacity hutt is spacious and warm.... As it's on the edge of the forest.. you can get up and out to this hut in almost any weather from the carpark on the Glenorchy Side.... Allow 3 hours each way
