We visited this restaurant as the one we had chosen was booked. What a fantastic recommendation. Brilliant décor, fantastic staff , fabulous food and a wine list to die for. The young Russian lady who owns Matisse is a joy, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate about good food and wine.

A cute wine bar tucked in along Herschell street. Came here for a quick wine before dinner around the corner at Bistronomy. We arrived half an hour before closing, and it was really nice that the staff did not make us feel rushed, in fact when we left i asked what time they were due to close and I was told "soon". There were a few other tables still enjoying their drinks so it it was really nice to see a place stay open a little later for the guests that were still around. Even though we sat outside, the ambience was nice being on a quiet side street and the building is certainly unique. The wine menu was extensive with selections from Hawkes Bay and around the world.

I already thought Matisse was an amazing place for there huge selection of wines and seasonal menu of tapa style dishes but they have become the best place in Napier for cocktails. I had a look through there cocktail book on Sunday and it was really impressive. Highly recommended.
