Off the beaten track. Level 2-3 fitness out of 5. Wear the right footwear. Not suitable for children under the age of 10. Thistles as high as 4 foot tall and the track can be quite dangerous, some parts are narrow and slippery. No public toilet. Had a great day exploring.

Limited car parking but have never been more that 6 cars maximum when visiting. Love the trails! So much fun, fresh air, wildlife, so many to do.

Stunning to visit and do the tracks. Took us 4 hours and was very hot. Stunning views over to Ruapehu. A couple of areas needs better signage and is a trek to get out there but the dam makes up for it.

Really amazing walk. You need to be reasonably fit and follow the arrows. Don't forget water, you are going to need it

I did the walk from quarry car park to the dam and back. Took me about 3 hours round trip with a quick stop for lunch. Didn’t come across a single person the entire hike, just some deer and goats. The trails are overgrown in several areas and there were spider webs across the trail the ENTIRE time (though that may be seasonal). I didn’t find the trails themselves that scenic but enjoyed the dam at the end. There are trail markings on the trees throughout the entire walk so it’s not hard to follow. Just pay attention otherwise it’s easy to miss one and you’ll have to backtrack your steps to get back on the trail.

Waitahinga trails are found 12 km past Bushy Park, inland from Kai Iwi on land owned by the Wanganui Council. Over 2012 and 2013 the Wanganui Tramping Club has done a wonderful job cutting and clearly marking a number of trails catering for various fitness levels. These trails pass through bush with a large diversity of species and some impressively big rimu and rata trees including the "hug tree" and the "nail tree". Destinations include superb views from Mt Egmont to Ruapehu from the Hen and Chickens walk, croppers clearing, and the dam at the base of Harry and Tom's tracks. The drive to the trails is scenic with great views, especially from Junction Road. Well worth visiting if you feel like a day out walking.
