Fantastic freedom camping spot for self contained vehicles. A good amount of space, and trees throughout to give that little bit more "personal space". We showed up after dark, and it was difficult to know where viable spaces were, and where we could squeeze into without too much trouble; butbwe picked a perfectly good area on the edge, and had a very comfortable night. As others have mentioned, the toilets are a wee walk away, and camping near them is not permitted... presumably because that area is intended for day use. I'd recommend planning on using your own facilities, unless you're good rolling through the dark and picking up a few new sandfly friends along the way.
We biked there along the gravel road to the mouth of the Wairau Diversion River. It's a beautiful place. Public toilet facilities are available there. Freedom camping is available for self-contained vehicles under the pine trees.
I actually liked the place. Met a lovely Fisherman who told me the river to sea inlet was man made and used to flood before this was done.. it's safe and restful and looks a popular fishing spot I'm told kawai and salmon are caught here.. this was my last night on the south island of a month long journey.. the sunset was beautiful but the sunrise was stunning
Great spot for freedom camping. Plenty of flat space near the river mouth with designated areas. Toilets are ok. Area is very tranquil with lots of birdlike around.
A lovely place to chill with the dog along the river bank and walk along the beach. Freedom camping and dog friendly. Max nights stay x2.
Great place to freedom camp for the night. Lovely views.
Good place to spend weekend, a few fish around to catch...
