Had a stunning day being guided by Dion James from Rotorua Sight-fishing Adventures today. Dion's knowledge both on the river and at the lake made for a very successful day with a number of fish caught including my first Rotorua brown which was also a personal best! The highlight was sight fishing the mouth of the Ngongotaha which was a completely different experience to all my previous sight fishing and finished the day on a high note. Dion is an engaging, patient & knowledgeable guide with a great sense of humour and I can highly recommend him to anyone wanting to have a memorable trip fishing Rotorua!
Dion is a very passionate and experienced freshwater angler who loves what he does and sharing that love and passion with others. For many years I’ve been filming my fishing show on some the most extraordinary rivers on the planet. Today’s experience on the Nungataha River alongside my wonderful guide Dion was absolute angling alchemy. Sight fishing for wild trout at its best. Having been Trout Fishing for over 30 years - Dion took me to Ngongotaha and Hamurana Trout “ Hunting” - the greatest skill set is seeing the bloody brownie’s !! Once Dion explained to me how to look for them it was a game changer - to spot - cast - and get a brownie to smash your fly as you retrieve - is heart attack action - as they say you can’t beat experience but more importantly you can’t beat “ local knowledge “ however you can invest in Dion for both - I will be back this summer 2019
I have to say that this was hands down one of The Best days of my life! Like any angler, i've often dreamed of pulling in a monstrous trout from a pristine, placid water in some remote corner of the world. Dion James helped me to make that day a reality, and form memories i'll cherish forever... My wife and I booked a half day with Dion on a small, crystal clear stream just outside of Rotorua. Adjusting to new territory and techniques, we each had our share of misses and snags, but Dion was tremendously patient and helped us make the adjustments necessary to each net several massive rainbows. With our half day drawing to an end, I made the call to extend our day a bit...this paid off immediately as I soon thereafter hooked up to and netted a Monstrous 10.3 pound Brown Trout...and Dion was equally as ecstatic as I was! Dion was a phenomenal guide and teacher, but I honestly felt as though I was fishing with a dear friend. He is extremely knowledgeable and personable, and his indigenous heritage provides insight on how to approach the sport with respect and humility. Having come to New Zealand to adventure and learn more about a foreign culture, I was able to do both with my now good friend Mr. Dion James!
