Probably the best experience I have had in New Zealand. Travel on the back of a trailer to the walk, through stunning hilly farm country. The walk to the start of the chasm is about 2km and very scenic then drop down into the chasm walking upstream for a bit to a gorgeous waterfall. You then spend a leisurely couple of hours strolling down the river bed through the chasm, swimming, picnicking and snapping photos before meeting back at the pickup point. A once in a lifetime experience, don’t miss it!

Well worth doing, very easy walk and very scenic. You are walking through the chasm stream bed so wearing water ready footwear is a must, hiking boots are not required and wouldn’t be the best. Wear clothing that can get wet and dry quickly, bring warm clothing for after being in the water. Ideal footwear would be sandshoes, not jandals for an easy walk.

Fun 10 minute ride on a modified trailer to get to start point. Obviously a stunning walk / wade / plunge pool / optional mini swim. I'm a slow plodder and I still did it in 2.5 hours with lots of photo stops. The rocks can be slippery so avoid hip surgery 5 years before you arrive!

Great little walk. Prepare to get wet and enjoy every magical moment.

Incredible unguided experience. You start out getting a 15min ride in the back of a trailer through farm land, then start the walk into the chasm. Incredible rock formations, waterfalls and clear river make for a really untouched feeling adventure. Highly recommend. About 20 mins from Martinborough along some gravel roads. A truly unique experience. Three hours is plenty of time to explore everything and get back in time to get a ride back to the farmhouse. Would love to do again with more friends. Would suit medium level fitness.

The Patuna chasm is a magical yet stunning experience far away from the busy city life, in a farm near to Martinborough. The entire stretch is around 6km long and takes approx 3 hours to complete. The adventure starts with a small drive in an off road trailer taking you through amazing views of the farm surrounded by tall mountains. Soon the drive comes to an end and the adventure begins walking through some rugged terrain towards the river. The trek is short and easy and to add some adventure there are few places where you need to use the rope to ascend down some steep steps. The next part of the adventure is the walk through the river. The walk becomes slower once you are in the river. The walk through the cold water soon took us to a small yet beautiful waterfall. After spending enough time at the waterfall we walked towards the chasm. There are small indications marked to help you reach the destination without putting too much effort. Further walking along the river we reached the chasm which was breathtakingly beautiful. The long deep limestone formations surrounding you like huge walls and caves is an incredible sight one can cherish forever.

This is a must do adventure be prepared to get your feet wet, (legs, knees and maybe more) I love waterfalls and this one did not disappointment me. There is quite a bit of climbing so being mobile is a must.
