The first DoC hut on the Rakiura Track, well maintained and offers little luxuries, like running water (not suitable for drinking) and a wood burner in the kitchen area. Rafters over the fire to dry out clothes are also available. Plenty of firewood out back. As is classic to huts, no electricity, so bring your own lights/candles. A short walk to a lovely beach. My only criticism is that the wood burner should be in the sleeping area rather than the kitchen — more important to have warmth while sleeping. All else considered, Port William and other huts like it completely shred the experience of “roughing it” because they give you water, fire, and a roof over your head. It’s the little things.

I was there around Christmas 2016. Hut tends to be fairly crowded this time of year so booking is essential. A good walk in with plenty to see. Doc Ranger , when i was there was a bit anal and over the top , whoever she was. A 24 Bunk hut which is part of the Rakiura Great walk. About 4 hours walk from Lee Bay and passes through sites of Historical value also - Maori Beach etc. Fishing off the wharf is a bit of a waste of time. Hut very tidy but it is a rather expensive cost for kiwis . Doc need to pick their staff a bit better.
Great wood burner stove for a cosy stay on a winter night.
