Difficulty but worth it! Started the gold mining walking track . Most of the hike are well maintained. Need good fitness levels. Very easy to miss the track ( I missed it ). Most of the trek covered under a dense bush. Can see mining rail track and other old engineering machinery on the way

An absolute bucket list climb. Need a reasonable fitness. Some parts difficult. We did it up from the town side in daylight and the road up from the golf course at night. Amazing views from the summit and the stars at night is spectacular. Almost 1000m up so take water and some sustenance to keep the energy levels up (BTW - don't get a fright at night when you come across a possum in your head lamp beam!!! )

This is a great up hill if your looking for fitness as well as views. It is a little hard to find the start of the walk which is behind the museum, parking is below this with a short walk up to the domain and museum. The track itself is well defined once you are on it though . It is a nice walk up to the first platform, Whakapipi lookout. From there it gets a little more intense with some step rocky patches towards the top. If you are fit and used of walking you can reach the summit in about 1 hour and a half at a good pace. It can take similar to return down as the Rock's and surface's can get slippery. Choose a day where you can see the top of the mountain from the bottom, the morning mist and clouds can take a while to burn off, the views need to the reward at the top !! About 10am is a good start time.

Accidentally climbed a mountain and loved it. Views were amazing! Could see all the way to the sea. Walked from the base. Mine track, ridge track, kennel and Mt Aroha track.

The hike is hard and in some places is more like climbing and will take you between 2 to 3 hours to the summit. Once on top will be rewarding. To return to the Domain you can follow the track back or you can take the road which is a little bit longer but is easier and you have nice views.

It was very slippery and muddy to climb in August, and needs experienced people to go all the way to the top, as the last 3rd is the steepest and hardest, and will need hands and feet!!! But it was so worth it, I want to go again in summer. If you want to recover in the hot spa below, then you may need to book a few days in advance!

On a clear day you can see all the way to Auckland. Two ways up and Down, I've been both ways and they're pretty easy. Nice walk with the fam : ) Even if it's a bad day you can see a lot from the lookouts below the clouds

Steep and hard going but stunning panoramic views on a clear day are worth every drop of sweat and more beside.
