Stunning Regional Park only 1 hour from Auckland City. Fantastic walks through pristine forest with incredible birdsong. And follow up your walk with a swim in crystal clear water in beautiful golden sand beaches

Awesome place, make sure you go early to get good parking. No shop so take what you need for the day. Beautiful beach, great walking tracks

An amazing park and bird/wildlife reserve with beautiful beaches. There is a large camping site inside the park near one of the beaches. The beaches are large, wide, and sandy. It is a popular place for surfers, too. The trails in the park are well developed and maintained and easy to walk. It is a paradise for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. It is one of the best kiwi preserves on the North Island. We took a night time kiwi tour of the park through a company called Kiwiness Tours to see some live kiwis in the wild (look at their website- kiwinesstours.co.nz) and it was an amazing experience! We saw multiple kiwis, owls, wood pigeons, and other wildlife. You must experience this park in the dark, as well as in the light of day. Not to be missed!

Beautiful spot and a Blueprint for rebuilding a better future for the Flora and Fauna of NZ, or the rest of the planet for that matter. There’s some beautiful beaches and some great walks, coastal and through native Bush. Being pest free native species can flourish. I hope expansion in the future is a possibility.

You'll need a whole day to see everything and have a swim. The water is warm and the waves are good. Lots of rabits and pukekos. All sea life is protected. No dogs allowed

About 90km north of Auckland is yet another of the amazing Auckland regional parks and possibly one of the best kept secrets. This ranks right up there with the Waitakeres/Piha/Karekare with the added advantage of beautiful white sand beaches that are much safer for swimming and surfing. It's also a sanctuary for several endangered bird species including the Takahe and Kiwi - so no dogs, cats or pets of any kind are allowed and access is controlled through electronic gates. The best place to park is at Anchor Bay where you'll find nice picnic areas and extremely modern and clean toilet and changing facilities - and a choice of 4 beaches. From various points in the park you'll get views out to Little Barrier and Kawau Islands. It's also a walkers paradise with numerous well marked trails throughout offering beaches, rugged coastline, wetland and forest views. I'd recommend the following combination of trails: Start from Anchor Bay on the Ecology Trail and follow the coastline as much as possible before climbing up to the North Coast Track and on to the trig station. From the trig station follow the signs for the Tokatu Loop Track to Tokatu Point which will give you some great viewpoints. Continue around the North Coast Track following the white marker posts and then branch off onto the Fishermans Track which takes you through a beautiful stretch of native forest where you'll see a wide variety of birdlife including Bellbirds, Tui and Saddlebacks. You'll hear some of the best birdsong in New Zealand here. Continue back to Abchor Bay and then head to the beach for a swim.

Such a lovely place to enjoy the hot summer sun and have a swim or board along the waves. There also is a rock bed which you could jump off from (at your own risk) which was a sight. Though, there are no lifeguards on-site, so always have to on the lookout. Recently built changing rooms and toilets are great and 5-6 choices of bush walks around the whole reserve was a big plus. Quite a decent sized carpark though it is best to arrive early for a great parking spot.

Beautiful scenery, unspoilt and natural. Lovely to have a picnic, beach is big enough to run and play on the sand. Lovely rock formations, little caves and walks to explore. Beautiful bird life sounds fill the air. The only negative for us was the toilet, brace yourself for a long drop
