Great outdoor setting. Food good value. Crew worked hard with host keeping close eye on things. Good beer selection on tap except for Dutch beer option from Old Indie Tuatara brewery.

Los Locos on Waikanae Beach’s south end is a vibrant little restaurant finding its feet while it cashes in on great popularity. The sun beams into its dining rooms and across its outdoor area, making it the ideal place for a Sol beer and clamato juice, or a Gisborne-made Mexican lager. The food is profoundly true to Mexican form. If you’re from the great isthmus state, you’ll feel entirely at home with freshly made corn chips and chunky guacamole. The grande burrito is big, filling most kiwi bellies superbly. Unfortunately the trueness To Mexican form leaves other main dishes like the tomato-baked market fish lacking that big of salt kiwis prefer on their dishes. Everything needed a bit of hot sauce. Lastly, the puddings were limited to three Mexican options (churros, orange and almond cake, and Mexican crème brûlée) and ice cream. A chocolate option aside from the churros’ sauce would have been a treat. The staff are very much still finding their feet. The charming maître d’ was unconfident in managing the room, and new drinks being served never saw old glasses removed. Entrees were slow to the table, and mains chased quickly after....notably after 40 minutes wait. Two staff seemed flustered throughout, and unfortunately the burrito filling was wrong - despite simple following the waitress’s advice to take the beef. The adobo chicken was still delicious. The beer list was fantastic with a good mix of craft beers and standard offerings, Mexican lagers and Tuatara’s best. Los Locos Ginger Beer stood out as a vestige of the Kantina’s forerunner. The wine list was robust, and could be improved with a few international offerings. Los Locos is a cool joint in a great spot. It’ll make for a good local eatery, but has some polishing to do til it catches up to local competition.

I have been to Los Locos a number of times during my month in Waikanae Beach. Usually just for a couple of beers and nachos, but also a couple of times for dinner. Lovely friendly people. Great service. Good quality food and drink

I really enjoyed the meal. The one request I would make is to provide some non-spicy alternatives (or at least indicate which ones aren't spicy). Although I found everything delicious, my wife can't tolerate anything beyond "ridiculously mild" and didn't really enjoy her dish.

Disappointed in food and service. Wrong wine was served and our dessert order was completely forgotten. Calamari and chicken entres were yum, but everything seemed to be a bit bland and lacking flavour.
