Beautiful lake. Getting there can be very challenging. Check the weather before you, conditions up there can be extreme. Wet weather gear is very important.

Once you arrive at the lake you are half way trough the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track. It will take you 3-4 hours depending on your fitness and the weather. Amazing lake, take some time to enjoy the view

Close to the midway point of the alpine crossing are the three lakes which are called emerald lakes for there yellow and blue colour. When you descend from the red crater you suddenly see them and will be stunned by the view. Unfortunately the smell is more like rotten eggs when you come to close due to the sulphur which they contain. Still they are worth the quite hard hike up there. One of the things you should have seen when visiting New Zealand.

Such a beautiful place to be. The most rewarding part of the hike. Like other reviewers said, you climb up the hills to the red crater, and when you descend from the red crater, you suddenly see those gorgeous lakes! The downhill is quite steep and slippery though. I slipped 4-5 times. But a tour guide taught me to use the heel to land, instead of the toe, like skiing, to have a better grip. It worked! Takes a few times to practice though.

Weather conditions can be really poor, but ones you reach The top of the mountain and then slide on little volcanic rocks you appreciate The beauty of these lakes. Warning - sulfur smell.

Amazing but difficult hike to get to the lakes. Make sure you check weather conditions before you venture on this journey.
