Definitely need to check this place out if you haven't already! It's about a 30-40 minute walk down to where you'll usually see the seals. Have been here quite a few times and have always seen seals. I think the best time to go is winter time? Don't quote me on that though. But very well worth a trip. Wouldn't recommend taking a flash car down here as the road is quite rough.

Views all the way to Kaikoura on a crisp winter day. Nice relaxed walk and of course the seals. In May and June usually.

Great walk out to the seal colony, very popular. Good to do it on a day with little wind.

We went around sunset. It was rugged, scenic and picturesque. We saw only two seals on this occasion. My tip is to check weather before embarking on this walk.

Lovely place to visit for a day out. Take a picnic and enjoy the scenery! The drive to the coast from Wainui is about 16km over fairly windy road, so allow about an hour from Wellington. The carpark is just short of the bridge (built 1916), and from there it's a good hour's walk from the carpark to Turakirae head. Make sure you take appropriate clothing, as the coast is very exposed. In summer it can be hot and windless, while in winter it can get very cold. The seals themselves are are near the water, so you'll need to clamber over the rocks a little to see them. Remember that the seals prefer privacy, so don't get too close.

Nice walk but not always going to see seals

Gorgeous walk, big bits of gravel to walk over towards the end so avoid jandals. Didn't see seals, but they are there mostly in winter months.

Not only is it a great walk, but also a great way to get up close to the seals
