Gary (Gaz) took us up the hill in Mt Cook to Tasman Saddle Hut for 6 days. My rope skills were virtually nonexistent before this last week but Gaz was super patient with me and showed me multiple different ways to do each knot until I found a way I was comfortable with (and could remember). We practiced crevasse rescue and got to launch ourselves into a crevasse (and what a view from below! Truly stunning!) and did whole seminars on meteorology, avalanches, and navigation. I learned how to feel a bit safer in the mountains and also make sure I can protect the people I’m with as well. Super grateful to Gaz for the confidence. He is ridiculously experienced in not just climbing and mountaineering and skiing, but also search and rescue - truly a feat in NZ. Few people know the mountains and industry as well as him (he was the president of NZ mountain guides for 6 years). Couldn’t recommend him enough. 10/5 stars. A game changer!!!
