Starting from the left side of the sign at the carpark. Don’t go to right side which is going to Cockayne Nature Walk. The first half section to the hut is really steep. The tarns are about one hour away from Carroll hut. It is good for swimming there in Summer. Kelly Hill is about 40 minutes from Carroll Hut and the view is great.

Absolutely beautiful tramping. Make sure to bring sketchbook and watercolors as there is plenty to paint around here.... mostly Alpine peaks. We heard and saw a kiwi from inside the hut. There's no fireplace in the hut and the powerpoint was not working, so be self sufficient.
Stayed here overnight in mid April. The trail took us around 2.5 hours to get up, and was pretty steep and technical. Once getting there, you can freely explore the upper mountain area. No fireplace, gas or electricity, but there's a stream nearby, and the mattresses (10) on the bunk beds were pretty comfortable so you only need to bring a sleeping bag.
Amazing! Suuupper steep trail up to the hut. But well worth it! Took me about an hour and a half (fit with a heavy pack) with few brakes. The views from the hut are insane!! I was here in the middle of October and there was plenty of water running in the creek near the hut. If you have time I would highly recommend summiting Kelly Hill to get ever better views
