Fox Glacier is another must-see spot just half an hour or so drive from Franz Josef Glacier Village. It has changed so much in the last 9 years since our first visit dues to global warming. 2hr return walk. Steep slopes at the end, before the glacier. Easy walk if no altitude sickness.
Surrounding scenery is far better than the glacier itself.
Nice easy track to the beautiful Fox Glacier. Some walking on river bed, some on track on edge of mountain. A few bits are a little steep, but most fitness levels can make it to the spectacular views. Plan on 60 minute return and you'll be fine.
Great view. You really need to take waterproof hiking boots and waterproof clothes. The drive up is fine, but the walk is very uneven. Weather can change quickly, so check the forecast
Plenty of parking , up to date info re wether, dangers . Handy warnings Along the track to keep you safe.. the view from the park is also breathtaking..
I gave it a 4 star because it is a great reserve and nature. Just a shame the glacier has been reduced so much over the years! Worth visiting!
This is a great short walk over glacial ruins to see an active glacier. The views of the steep cliffs and mountains is spectacular in the late afternoon with the sun and shadows. Overall the glacier isn't super impressive and you can't get that close to it, but the walk and the views are well worth a stop if you are driving through on a vacation.
