A great way to travel into the city, with friendly staff and mostly reliable services. Sometimes small ferries are used which isn't ideal for larger crowds and rough seas.

Went to the Gulf harbour ferry terminal and purchased ticket from the ticket office at the harbour to Tiritiri Matangi about 10 minutes before the ferry arrived. It was cheaper to catch the ferry here than at the Auckland ferry terminal, and it had free parking. Nice service and explained that the cost the guided walk was used to help fund the island, which I thought was a good cause. The ticket office was a wooden building near the terminal. There are a few signs for it.

I would reccomend this ferry for Te Araroa hikers. Fast, friendly and super fun.

It probably helps that it was a glorious day from a weather point of view and calm waters. The crew were polite the ferry was very clean and the sailing was very smooth. Only small thing is that it would gave been even better if the crew had explained at Auckland that there was no point in waiting on the ramp as they were cleaning the ferry and having a few minutes off the ferry. It was too hot and my 86 year old Dad didn't need to stand around in that heat.

Using the ferries is a great way to get to downtown Auckland. Refreshments available on board. In bad weather a bus is substituted and using the motorway bus lanes makes for a comfortable journey. Unfortunately parking at Gulf Harbour ferries can be difficult if travelling on a later ferry.

Taking the ferry definitely beats taking the bus or driving, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Not all sailings are wheelchair friendly and with raised door sills and the ever changing sea conditions taking the ferry is not for the infirm.

Feeding the fish was an experience unlike I'd ever experienced. It was pretty surreal to see them all coming up for the mixed veges!
