I rented two cars from Mode during my six weeks in NZ. Both cars were issue free, the price was great, and staff very friendly and helpful. I have already recommended this company to family and friends, and will continue to do so! Part of what makes them great is they don’t have all kinds of hidden fees. Both the cars I rented were basic models with no frills, which is what you should expect for such a great price! The wagon and mini camper were functional, and exactly what I expected based on the website. The mini camper’s included equipment was basic, entry level camping gear that’s seen a decent amount of use so I changed to a station wagon as I have my own backpacking setup for sleeping and cooking. they rented me a chilly bin (cooler) for my entire 30 days for less than I would have paid to buy my own. The mini camper setup might not great for someone much taller than 180cm. The bond is 3000 when you have your own rental car insurance (eg through travel insurance, a credit card, or your insurance in your home country), so be aware that you need enough room on a credit card for a pre-authorization. I rented & returned to the same location in Auckland, so can’t comment on the one-way rental fee.

The most chill car rental experience ever. Got in at 810 got out by 820. Cost 55 NZD for the 24 hour rental and the car worked as expected. They offer lower rates than the rest because they also own a mechanic shop on site so they fix and maintain the cars themselves.

My requirements were simple: Just a small car on a weekend to move house. My bad, I started looking for a car only on Saturday morning. Tried a few without success till I came to Mode. The girl at the reception was most friendly and helpful. She managed to find a car for me for the next day. She told me I had to return the car the next day before closing time at 5.30pm as they do not have a drop-off. I'm OK with that. Collected the car the next day. The staff did the usual checks. Took pics of the car exterior and the dashboard. I MADE A BIG MISTAKE of not checking on the fuel level. Prior to returning the car, I pumped enough petrol for the tank to be full. My wife drives the same car, hence I knew just how much to fill. Upon returning, guy said my tank was not full, indicator's showing still one bar below full. So I drove to the pump and filled her up till it overflowed. Cost me only a few dollars, felt kind of embarassed when paying. Returned the car again and was told the same thing. This time, I said it can't be; then he admitted the indicator's probably faulty. That's when I realized I could have been scammed. I mean .. what was the indicator showing at the beginning? Also, he should probably know that car has a faulty indicator. I could have demanded to see the picture he took of the dashboard when I took delivery of the car, but I had a long day and was feeling tired. So I did not pursue the matter.

All together a good rental company, easy booking procedures, easy return of car, no unnecessary bureaucracy, car was not the newest model, but reliable and very economic (Toyota Corolla Fielder Station Wagon), unfortunately they couldn't give us a lift back to the hotel, which was around the corner, but had been very helpful with getting a cab.... highly recommendable company!

BEWARE. Big disappointment picking up the car my friends and I rented through another agency online - the picture showed a sedan, but the model given to us was a hatchback, which was sold as an 'upgrade' (which would have been had we rented a Mazda Demio hatchback). It was clear that the guy serving us at pick up couldn't do anything about it and we didn't want to ruin the beginning of our trip. I asked him to leave a message to his manager to have a resolution upon return. Coming back a few days later, nothing had been done and the girl helping us was very friendly and tried to help, but it was also up to someone else to handle our case. She made a call and put me on the phone with this other woman who couldn't have been more robotic in her approach - felt like she was reading the exact same script that the first guy had - a total waste of time. As it was our last day in the country, I didn't want to waste it trying to get a solution from them, but I feel this review is fair. There was a clear photographic discrepancy between what the agency sold vs. what Mode gave us, something which they should handle, but refuse to. Never again.
