My first experience of the playhouse in Auckland was in 2003. When I arrived I stayed in ACB backpackers and went up for a pint. The place is massive and had a good selection of beers. A great venue to watch sports. When I was first there, there was a premier league match on the big screen. The lad I went there with for a pint, gave me the low down on the best bars in Auckland to work in after I said I was looking for a bar job. I found it a great place to meet and chat to fellow travellers.

We were attending a show, and decided to meet here and have drink and some food. Then after the show for one for the road. We received completely different levels of services. Pre Show - We all commented how quick and prompt the food arrived, it was hot and tasty. All six of us had different choices. I chose the mushroom burger without salad, the waiter even pointed out that this was the vegetarian option and contained no burger. Portions were well sized. Post Show - After enjoying ourselves earlier, we thought we would return for one for the road. Things were just messy, it took two staff to sort out what a Southern Comfort & L&P was. Others in our group had to explain what a Rum & Coke in a tall glass was. The staff could not understand english, and other patrons were equally frustrated too.
I enjoyed a lunch and beer with friends when attending an event (TEDx Auckland) at the Aotea Centre. The staff were friendly & efficient, The food was quick & tasty with decent portions. Exactly what I would expect from a pub meal, and I was very impressed with the speed which was a critical item for us.
