Christ Church Cathedral, one of New Zealand's most significant heritage buildings, was badly damaged by the Canterbury earthquakes. We are reinstating this important spiritual, social and civic place. Vision To reinstate the iconic Christ Church Cathedral in the heart of Christchurch as an enduring symbol of regeneration, life and healing and as a testament to what can be achieved by working together. Overview Reinstatement means a combination of repair, restoration, reconstruction/rebuild and seismic strengthening. The reinstated Cathedral will retain many of the heritage features and as much of the gothic revival design as possible and, where practicable, the original materials will be re-used. The design for how the Cathedral will be stabilised, reinstated and operated is underway. Stabilisation construction is expected to begin in first quarter 2020 and take 12 to 18 months. The project is expected to take between 7 and 10 years. Partners A joint venture agreement signed on 22 August 2018 cemented the path to reinstatement. Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited (CCRL) is managing and delivering the reinstatement. CCRL is registered for charitable status and is chaired by Justin Murray an investment banker and company director. Church Property Trustees (CPT) owns the Cathedral on behalf of the Christchurch Anglican Diocese and is chaired by Bishop Peter Carrell. CPT is a shareholder of CCRL. Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Trust (CCRT) is a Crown-appointed trust that is helping to govern and raise funds for the project. CCRT is a shareholder of CCRL. It is chaired by Christchurch businessman Peter Guthrey. As key stakeholders and project partners, members of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch and the heritage community will provide important input into design and functionality discussions.
