The Driving Creek Railway climbs 2.7km from the Base Station at 55 metres above sea level to EyeFull Tower at 167 metres above sea level, a total climb of 115 metres. With an average gradient of 1-in-24 (1 vertical metre for every 24 metre of length) the Driving Creek Railway is New Zealand’s steepest railway. Unlike most other tourist railways, this railway is newly built rather than being an old line that has been restored. It is New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway. The railway started as a tourism business in 1990 with the granting of a railway licence. However, a number of earlier excursions had been given with donation from paying passengers. Driving Creek Railway Ltd was established was officially established by Barry Brickell in May 2003 and he charged a Board of Directors with the responsibility to manage the assets and operations of Driving Creek. In March 2009 Barry established the Driving Creek Railway, Arts and Conservation Trust to oversee the running of Driving Creek’s many facets. Today the seven Trustees are responsible for ensuring that the Mission Statement and Objectives of the Trust are achieved. In September 2016 the operating company Driving Creek Railway Ltd became a registered Charity.
