ACC set up an Initial Medical Assessment with Dr. Burgess (introduced as an ACC internal Dr. to me). I was surprised to be asked to attend the IMA, since I was well on my way to return to my pre injury role, but am still in pain; I was told it was just a backup plan. Dr. Burgess was very pleasant. His report however, came back partly incorrect and incomplete. It included everything I had told him about my improvements, but it was clearly lacking a full account of impairments. His report of my physical tolerances was very different to what I had told him, and exceedingly optimistic. I sent both him and ACC a list of corrections. I did not receive an updated report as a result however, but a letter from my case manager Bharvi, advising that she had suspended me from all entitlements. This apparently was due to a further report (in answer to questions she sent) with more incorrect statements/assessments from Dr. Burgess. Again, I informed them of the errors, and requested a second opinion from an independent specialist, which was declined. I was also denied further therapy, which is still needed, and am expected to return to full time work within 3 weeks following this ordeal. As a result I would not recommend Dr. Burgess. If you are going through this ACC process, be aware, and feel free to refer to this.

Had to have an assessment with Dr Burgess in order for ACC to accept that my shoulder injury was caused by my work, took months of getting scans and seeing my GP and then a surgeon. ACC would not accept it until I had this assessment. Dr Burgess was fair and listened to my case and looked at my work roles over the years and he found that my work had caused by shoulder tendons to wear out and that actually both shoulders probably were stuffed from all my heavy work. After his report ACC accepted my claim and I got my surgery and they paid me for lost work.
