Basic accommodation but very clean and tidy. A great location, very close to the main tourist attractions of Franz Josef. There are heaps of walking spots nearby if you're in to the outdoors. A restaurant/bar on site serving delicious food and great drinks specials. There's also lots of bars/cafes within easy walking distance. Would definitely stay here again.

I was travelling together with my mom by car when there was a road closure towards Hokitika and back to Wanaka due to heavy storm, slips and falling trees along the road. So it left me no choice but to find a place to stay in Haast. We were stranded in Haast for 2 days and chose Wilderness Backpackers/Motel Accommodation. The room is cozy enough for both me and my mother to stay even though we had to share the bathroom and communal area with the other guests. The motel owner, Adele and her husband are friendly, kind and considerate persons. We were very happy by their hospitality during our stay though we were stranded and can't do much activities in Haast except going to Haast beach. The motel is situated right in front of the supermarket to shop for any groceries. You need to pay for the WiFi. The common kitchen is clean, bathroom is acceptable clean. If I got an opportunity to visit NZ again, I will definitely drop by this accommodation and extend my gratitude to Adele and her husband for their best hospitality to me and my mom during our stay.

The owners are absolutely lovely. We were shown two different rooms and decided on the backpacker side. The room was spotless. The courtyard was a beautiful place to enjoy a cup of tea at night away from the bugs. Upon check in we were offered bicycles free of charge and pointed towards a gravel trail in the bush that lead us to a beach. We were even offered bug spray before riding off. Can’t say enough great things. Would certainly stay again.

Clean, comfortable stay. Friendly host with great chat. Good price. Best pub in town is just a short walk down the street. Will stay again next time we pass through Haast. Thanks

Stayed in a backpacker room, had comfortable wooden bunk beds which is always way better because they don't squeak. Yeah it sucks about lack of cellphone reception, but that's just Haast so ompletely unrelated to the backpacker. The kitchen reasonably small but fine for the amount of people who are staying there, likewise in relation to cupboard and fridge space, was plenty for the numbers probably there. Lady who checked me in was friendly and there was a cool jungle room (photo) that had a games cupboard and light up speakers, bit strange but gave a cool vibe I guess.

It has character, strange vibes, nets on the windows, and the single greatest showers you will ever encounter in any form of accommodation. Yes, there's quite a few extra charges, but they are all signed up. Don't come expecting a free lunch, this is Haast, miles from anywhere. It's better than a tent, the owner has some interesting stories, the local pub is great and hey, Haast. I've stayed there many times, and the bathrooms and kitchen are clean. Bring your boots, a smile, and expectations relevant to the area rather than Queenstown.

Great visit. Been several times before and always found the rooms clean and tidy. This stay was as good, our host Adele was wonderful. Nothing was too much bother. Loved the gift of some whitebait!!

Booked through Booking.com, the price was booked at 90 for a double bed with shared bathroom. When we checked in, they appeared to not recognize our having booked a room and charged us 98. -2. We had selected the 10pm check IN option online and they then told us via email they CLOSE the office at 10pm - if they don't want people checking in at that time, they should not have it as an option -1. As we were travelling with food, we put our frozens in the freezer, which we had to turn on. There seems to be an unspoken 10pm curfew, as the owners were turning off lights even though you obviously were still up and a sign in the kitchen tells you to finish your dishes by 10pm. When we got up in the morning, we found our frozens NOT frozen! They had turned the freezer off on our goods. I was very very disappointed -1. Signs in your room and other places stated that check OUT time was 10am and anyone found after 10.15am would be charged an overstaying fee - I don't doubt it. If you do stay in the backpacker area, be warned if you are a 'large' person, the shower is very awkward to get in and out of because of the way the doors are set - built rather badly. Though the place was clean and tidy 1, I would not recommend this as a relaxing place to stay, just too many minuses.
