Heads Up for Kids is a nationwide Lions Clubs New Zealand project which collects old money and foreign currency for the benefit of Kiwi kids. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has estimated that there is over $80 million in old NZ coins sitting idle in households across the country. Collected through Resene stores and selected New World supermarkets, the old money and foreign currency is delivered to Wellington by Fastway Couriers, sorted and then redeemed for legal tender. Then used to fund education programmes that boost confidence, teach leadership and team skills and provide an overall positive experience for young New Zealanders from low decile schools who demonstrate positive attitudes toward learning, their peers and their community. "It’s important that young people are recognised and given opportunities that boost their confidence and provide a springboard for them to grow into great New Zealanders of the future, " Simon Hayes, Heads Up for Kids founder. Heads Up for Kids has been commended as an original fundraiser as not only does it not compete with any other charities, as only 'unwanted' money is collected, it promotes recycling as all coins are melted down and reused. Old money and foreign currency can be dropped off at any Resene store and selected New Worlds, or by calling 0800 OLD MONEY for a Lions Club member to collect.
