The Howard League works for a more humane prison system in New Zealand. We hear prisoners’ voices and advocate on their behalf. We work for open and rational debate on prison reform and alternatives to prison in New Zealand. Our goals are simple: There must be fewer people in New Zealand's prisons Prisons must be as good as possible at helping prisoners to turn their lives around We achieve these goals by conducting sound research, working with prisoners and the Department of Corrections and keeping public debate informed and on-track. Our three branches work together collectively as the National Coalition of Howard Leagues. The chairperson of the Coalition is Paul O'Neil. Our patron is Nigel Hampton QC. The National Coalition and the independent branches work as independent agencies and receive no funding from the government, and have no political affiliations. We have links with several international penal reform organisations.
