Interpreting New Zealand exists to break down the language barrier between English-speaking professionals and their clients. We provide interpreters in some 70 languages, including NZ Sign Language. Our service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We offer face-to-face, telephone or video interpreting, depending on your need and location. At Interpreting New Zealand we are uncompromising about interpreting standards. Interpreters must be fully trained and assessed before they work for us; then they must adhere to a strict code of ethics as part of their contract. For that reason, we recruit proficient bilingual speakers, train them in interpreting skills, assess them to ensure they are competent, and then manage and monitor their performance. This includes providing continuing professional development for interpreters, and formally collecting customer feedback every 12 to 18 months. We advocate for using trained interpreters whenever language is a barrier to communication. We provide resources on how to work with interpreters, including written and video guidelines, and offer tailored training, free of charge, to users of our service. Interpreting New Zealand is a not-for-profit social enterprise that is not funded by government. Therefore to continue doing what we do, we charge fees for our service – contact us for a quote. Interpreters’ services are generally provided free to the non-English speaker by the agency that makes the booking. This reflects New Zealand’s human rights legislation and the Health and Disability Commissioner’s Code of Rights, both of which promote a person’s right to effective communication.
