Such a beautiful place to visit and relax. Contains some stunning plants and flowers which we do not usually find here in NZ. Plus there r even tags which tell you where they are from. This place is a perfect oasis to take a seat on the nice bench & warm up if it’s a cold invercargill day. Make sure to bring the kids here as in the centre is a boat contained in a pond and surrounded by fish. There is also a nice fresh smell in the winter gardens, something I do not always find in other winter gardens I’ve visited. Make sure to check it out !

Don't be deceived by the name, its more like walking into a tropical summer where you are greeted with an array of just beautiful flowers and colours and is quite something, it just adds to this utopia in the middle of the town. There is no cost, no entry fee and their are public toilets available.

The Winter Gardens was made possible by bequests from John Baker and I A Steans and was opened in 1957. It contains an extensive collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants, including a small display of carnivorous plants. The warmth takes the visitor straight to the tropics and the entrance foyer, with its pool of goldfish and abundant foliage, encourages that feeling. The west and John Baker wings contain massed displays of flowering plants, including cyclamen, begonia and other exotic flowers in season. A separate area houses the cacti, including several of the larger varieties. Please be aware that inside the main botanical area is very humid. Your camera equipment is likely to steam up and may form moisture inside your equipment. Take a Lens wipe with you to wipe the lens before every photo.

Always a good place to practice close-up photography particularly in winter as it never is raining, is always warm & never windy. Shame the carnivorous plants are no longer on display, I miss them.
