We had the best time at @lammermoor_distillery yesterday with John and Susie. Dan was completely in his distillation geek element as John walked us around the different parts of the whole process. From organic grain grown in their own paddocks to bottling the end result on site, this is a proper hands-on operation that has its spiritual roots in a moonshine operation run back in the 1860s. Their gin, overseen by Susie, is ready to roll and available in four different flavours. The original sings you a song of grapefruit and summer and is the smoothest gin I think I've ever come across. Add to that a sticky sweet sloe gin, a blue gin which turns purple when you add tonic and a all-too-drinkable pink gin, and you can see why I was in absolute heaven. Whisky, of course, takes a wee bit longer due to the aging process. Each barrel's profile is different and will "tell its own story" as John tinkers with different elements that will adjust the flavour profile. The three we tried were young, but already amazing. One was peat smoked (the peat is also from on their own property), mānuka smoked, and a triple distilled beauty that had been sat in a port barrel. All divine and all completely different. John reckons the meteorological extremes of the Serpentine Hills has a hand in aging the whisky more quickly as the temperature changes dramatically and often. Perhaps it's proximity to the heavens above at 1100m above sea level that makes the product sing. Whatever it is, the Elliot family are doing something very, very right. Distillery tours are 25/person and include snacks, a taste of all offerings and a damn good yarn with John and Susie. I could not recommend this place more highly - it's the distillation of the Kiwi spirit of can-do in a humble farm shed at the end of a dirt road. Magic.

I have yet to get to the Distillery, but I have sent my husband and a group of friends. They absolutely loved it, loved the whiskey and gin and the experience as a whole. I have purchased the gin but of recent I have purchased all the different flavours. I'm loving them all, love the bottles and Susies information about all the varieties and what to add with them. Will be going for a visit this Summer

The distillery is nestled in an amazing area of Central Otago, the drive out was beautiful. The actual distillery itself is full of character and it was fascinating hearing the story of how it came to be from John and Susie, not to mention the Gin & Whisky tasted great too! Highly recommend a visit.

Fantastic little hip flask, and the whiskey inside was very aromatic, smooth with a great after taste. Highly recommended.

I was totally blown away by the passion and creativity of John and Susie who own this distillery. It is one of the best tours I have been on for the production of alcohol, just so interesting. I must say I am fond of wine and I hardly drink spirits at all. Before we went on the tour I told my friends I don't actually like whiskey. To my surprise I loved the mellow complex flavours of John's whiskey, I drank and enjoyed a glass, neat, then tasted an array of different types and also drank those! My favourite was the manuka smoked whiskey with a little water. I do like an occasional gin, have been to some gin bars and even had a 10 course degustation meal with gin in Barcelona once. I enjoyed Susie's Gin & Bare It more than the well known brands. With four different flavours and only space for 2 in my luggage it was a difficult choice. I settled on a classic citrus clear gin and also took a bottle of the dark gin which is a cocktail makers dream come true with shades of blue and purple depending on what you mix it with. I promised myself to return for the other two, the bottles are unique and gorgeous. My husband is not a gin drinker, but I am afraid I have to share. When people put in the research, the hard work to grow organic grain and refine their process with passion, you end up with truly outstanding products. John and Susie epitomise the warmth of southern hospitality and will take you into the amazing heart of Central Otago - don't miss it. And yes, my husband will be sharing his Lammermoor hip flask of whiskey with me unless I manage to buy a barrel!
