Predator Free Hauraki Coromandel 2030 is an exciting, ambitious project to substantially advance PFNZ’s 2025 goal of predator suppression over 1 million hectares of mainland NZ. It is a regional landscape-scale predator-free project over 230,000 hectares between the stern (Mt Moehau) and bow (Mt Te Aroha) of the Hauraki waka and its islands, founded by ten conservation groups and six NGOs in 2016. AMBITIOUS. BUT NOT CRAZY ❊ Although 230,000 ha, over 50% of the mainland is already under predator management ❊ DOC-managed Coromandel and Kaimai Forest Parks form the Peninsula (and our project’s) spine ❊ Over 20 near-contiguous community conservation projects connect to that spine ❊ Successful landscape-scale control is underway now (5 projects > 4,000 ha; 1 = 14,000 ha) ❊ Logical extension of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park PF project, creating a natural corridor to the mainland. AN EXEMPLAR PROJECT WITH MULTIPLE DIMENSIONS ❊ Exceptional biodiversity: One of New Zealand’s six biodiversity hotspots ❊ Home to many of Aotearoa’s endangered endemic species ❊ Broad range of habitats: coastal dunes and estuarine wetlands to intact complexes of lowland and montane forest ❊ Significant social, cultural, economic development opportunities. AN EXCELLENT FOUNDATION FOR SCALING UP ❊ Advantages of Peninsula geography for defendability ❊ Strongly established foundation of conservation work and predator control since the 1980s ❊ Expertise at the forefront of good practice ❊ Longstanding community group/NGO partnerships in place. OUR GOAL: By 2030 the Hauraki Coromandel region has been enriched (socially, culturally, environmentally, economically) by becoming predator free.
