A UNESCO site. A fabulous volcanic wonderland. Just be aware that the volcanoes can erupt at any time or a lahra (form of inland tsunami) can come down the mountain (from the crater lakes) at any time...

One of the best hiking trips you can experience. I couldn't do the complete hike because I went with my folks and they are bit too old for it. However we did enjoy a lot of the stunning views. Best time to hike is during the summer but make sure you bring your sunscreen and appropriate gear. It can get really hot It's just off the desert ️ road. It's does look deserted and I can't believe such a landscape in New Zealand. Loved it and I recommend it for everyone to experience at least once in their life

Awesome, absolutely amazing hike! But definitely not suitable for beginners! Please take care and follow the instructions and prepare for a successful day: weather conditions, volcanic activity, etc. Must have mountain skills, equipment and experience! Would recommend the shuttle service

We walked the Old Coach Road Walk/Cycle track (from Ohakune Side) to the Old Rail Viaduct. It was a beautiful day and the walk is a nice easy one. We did detour off and walk through the tunnel which was a little scary as it was dark but still amazingly cool. The Viaduct was awesome. Very high but with lovely views on either side of it. This walk would be great for a family or just anyone wanting some time out.
