If you like history with a side of spookiness Napier prison is a place to visit. Being the oldest prison in NZ they offer good old historical tour as well as the spooky ghost tour. You'll be given a headset for the tour, and since everyone is listening through their own headset you can choose the tour for yourself even if you are going there as a group. Perfect for those doesn't feel too comfortable with ghost stories or history lesson whichever it might be. They even offer escape room experience, if you want the extra challenge. The staff there are quite friendly and knowledgeable, if you have a chat with them they might have their own ghost stories to share. Recommended.

We took a self guided tour. Interesting history for a prison. You can take your own mug shots and do some creative photography. Tour is cheap..I think it was around 20. The whole tour and photography took around 1 to 1.5 hours. Did not like the small radio thing that we had to hold to our ears to listen. Maybe bigger speakers so everyone can listen in at the same time would be a better idea.

A hidden gem in Napier. Glad I visited the place and it's a heritage building. It has so much of history and lots to learn about New Zealand. The place is well preserved as it was built in 1850s and it functioned till 1993 December. Had a chat with the staff and realized the struggle the management has to keep up to maintain the place as it's not a government entity and does not have any funding. Kudos to the friendly staff and the management for the superb work.

This is definitely one of the most worth visiting place in Napier, it provides me the history of NZ in a physical, visualized form. The staff was very kind, helpful, easy to approach and the information provided was very informative as well. I personally like it a lot and would highly recommend it.

One of the best experience here in NZ (like museum) we had a historical tour and after we could take pictures around the building. Sad history... but such an interesting.

Good historic, interesting place, went on a weekday and was really quiet. I did the historic guided tour and my partner did the ghost tour. The building had fallen into disrepair and the guided tours were a bit lacking in content and volume. In my opinion it wasn't a bad tour but it could definitely benefit from more panels on the walls with more info. Some of the cells were original and some were used as storage facilities. Some areas seemed a bit tacky, like the leftover decor from the b n b. Overall the history of the site and of some of the prisoners was interesting but could do with some better signage and structure.

We all enjoyed the tour and we hadn't realised that if you have hearing aids they can give you an audio wand with no sound effects which made my dad's day. So much easier to hear.

An excellent experience. Some of the rooms were genuinely spooky and the voice over was professional and informative. One of the highlights of our trip to Napier.
