As you come off the ferry the visitors centre is on your right. As you come off the plane bus it is to the left. Easy to find and very informed people. As with most people living on the island giving visitors help and cheer is part of your usual day. I heard the workers explaining about alternatives and support all businesses. The building is called the red shed. You can use eftpos and credit cards and they help with bookings for tours and accommodation. They also have souvenirs for yourself or entire family. Lots of maps and pamphlets plus help for no cost.

Information, shop and booking tours for 'Real Journeys'. Take a quick bus trip around the island to get your bearings and enjoy the stories from the witty driver. Ulva Island is magnificent. Small group size with the local guide means you get to see and learn, a whole lot more about Stewart Island. We happened to have the same guide for our Kiwi Experience. Seeing kiwi in the wild and up close, made me a very happy kiwi.
Better off going to the doc visitor centre unless you want to rent a car/scooter etc.
Nice Visitor Centre only a few steps from the small ferry terminal with plenty of information available, free maps and books about the area. It's also a shop where you can buy gifts, I bough a great looking and comfortable New Zealand embroidered jacket at a very reasonable price. There are also gifts to purchase. You can hire bikes here as well. The staff were friendly and helpful in giving us some useful information.
Coming to Stewart Island? Then a must do is Make Your Own Treasure at RAKIURA Jade. Come and enjoy learning to work our pounamu (greenstone/jade) with Dave and Bine in our workshop studio overlooking beautiful Half moon bay
Nice view over Oban from the Visitor Center, the center itself is operated by the ferry company and the doc building is a little further into Oban. Has plenty of souvenirs and nicknacks for those that want to pick something up before jumping on the ferry. Also has plenty of information on things to do locally as well as offering hire bikes and scooters.
Great staff, very helpful, but let down by their head office a little. Really useful having mountain bikes to rent (though if not up for the exercise the electric bikes on the island are highly recommended) but the Red Shed folks are not being given the staff or training to service them at the moment. The staff were great when the one I rented failed on me, but it wouldn’t have happen with proper maintenance.
Had a fantastic trip out to Ulva island, recommend birds and feathers as your guide
