Pomegranate Kitchen is a Wellingon-based catering company with a mission to help realise the potential of former refugees so that they can thrive in New Zealand. Operating as a not-for-profit social enterprise offering group lunch and event catering services, Pomegranate Kitchen allows Wellingtonians to discover off-the-beaten path cuisines and new flavours from around the world. Focusing on the skills that former refugees can bring to New Zealand’s society, we have people from refugee backgrounds involved at all levels of Pomegranate Kitchen including cooking, admin & design, and our Board of Trustees. Finding work is one of the most challenging aspects of resettling in a new country. Language barriers and the lack of local experience or references means it can be very difficult for former refugees to find the right training or job opportunities. Pomegranate Kitchen has a training and development programme for our employees from refugee backgrounds which includes English language, health and safety, kitchen skills, and on-the-job catering experience. Sharing fresh and authentic food is our way of recognising the rich contribution former refugees make to our society, and making sure our city is a welcoming new home.
