The Provincial Development Unit (PDU) was established to work across government and with industry, communities, iwi and local government through three programmes: the Provincial Growth Fund, He Poutama Rangatahi and the Sector Workforce Engagement Programme. The PDU is a business unit of the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, and has been operating since 2018.
