Pēpi Penapena is a social welfare organisation committed to sharing the beautiful parenting kaupapa (practices) of traditional Māori in pre-colonial times. Our research tells up that our tūpuna (ancestors) had wonderful whānau values and protected their tamariki above all else. Our evidence is based on oral histories, exporer's accounts and artworks from the period. Through Helen’s research these past 20 years, we know how our tūpuna supported each other and raised their children. We want Kiwi parents and whānau to learn, understand and own that kaupapa and apply it to their everyday life, building strong relationships between whanaunga (relatives) and the children under their care. Currently, we publish this kaupapa on a blog and link through to a growing Facebook page. Come on this journey with us. We once were warriors, but we were tender and loving parents too. This is what we remember.
