The Wairau bar is an important archaeological site in New Zealand with remains and artifacts dating from 1280 c.e. Which make it one of the oldest if not the oldest site of human habitation in New Zealand which means the first settlers arrived there from the Pacific as evidenced by shells unique to the tropics and one set of remains that when analysed show mineral isotopes in the bones that suggest the person's diet was originally from to the tropics. In April 2009, in an emotional ceremony at Wairau Bar, that woman's remains were reburied by Rangitāne ki Wairau elders. The remains were excavated in an archaeological dig around 1940 and had been held in Canterbury Museum in Christchurch. The iwi had sought their return for many years. The site is pretty barren and doesn't show anything of note but it is a significant pace in New Zealand's history.
There's some old history to be found here. And there is a public toilets at the end of the road.
a very interesting place
Because it's peaceful and not too crowded.
It is the hidden gem.
Great spot.
