Nice bush clad easy walk to Birchville dam, then steep to top of ridge. Then 20 minutes to Cannon point lookout. Round trip from Totara Park approx 2 hours.

Very limited parking lots which is up a steep slope, where there is no signage to indicate. There is also no toilet before and after trekking.

This is a spectacular walk to the west of the northern suburbs of Upper Hutt. With waterfalls, bridges (including a swing bridge) a dam, mountain ridges, native bush, birds, and awesome views from the top of the ridge, including from the Cannon Point Trig. You can see all the way from the top, down the Hutt Valley to Petone Esplande and the sea. The path of the mighty Hutt River is laid out before your eyes. There is parking at the entrance and the walk itself takes and hour or two. A medium level of fitness is required, but my parents (in their 70s) and my nieces (8 and 6) handled it ok. If you only want a flat short walk, then you can easily get to the Birchville Dam in 15 minutes. Go for an adventure and check this out if you can.
