This is right next to where the Wainuiomata River drains into the sea. The beach has fenced areas where northern NZ Dotterels nest just above the high tide region of sea-water. Please respect their habitat. Dogs aren't allowed past the car park area. Easy access to the beach or the river mouth from the car-park. The Baring Head Lighthouse can be seen to the right from the car park. Nice views of the open sea from here on a sunny day. Little further down, the Old Coast Road road crosses the Orongorongo river and comes to an end.

easy parking, at least in winter. sheep share the beach side of the fence so there's a special one-person-at-a-time, sheep-proof gate between the beach and parking. endangered dotterels nest here so make sure you obey the signs to avoid trampling nests. dogs aren't allowed past the gate/on the beach.

If you love wilderness and wild natural beauty, this is the place for you. The wanui river meets the ocean on one side and Barring Head light house to the other side. You will need to bring your supplies and food and spend a whole day of tranquility and still be a short distance from the city. Starting from the car park walking along the river, you will find fish and eel trying to hide away from you while the banded dotterel chirping and perfectly camouflaged in the short shrub. As you walk towards the ocean the sound of the crashing waves drowns your thoughts and leaps at your heart. A majestic place!
